Why It Matters
Now is the time to strengthen America’s future by advancing our nation’s energy independence. For decades, subsidiaries of NextEra Energy Resources have been helping power the U.S. economy —fueling growth, innovation and a higher quality of life.
Features of Granite City Energy Storage
Designed to store up to 300 megawatts (MW) of American energy—enough to help power thousands of homes and businesses.
Targeted to begin operations as early as May 2029, pending all required permits and approvals, the project will bring new jobs, investment and opportunity to the area.
Supporting Benton County
With an expected lifespan of 30 years, the Granite City Energy Storage project will provide the county with steady growth and long-term community benefits throughout the lifespan of the energy center. Development begins well before the project breaks ground.
Granite City Energy Storage serves as a catalyst for local economic growth, creating hundreds of construction jobs, supporting long-term employment opportunities and generating new revenue for the county through landowner payments and tax contributions.
Beyond job creation, the project boosts local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to caterers and office suppliers, by driving demand and supporting the broader regional economy. Our commitment also extends to improving local infrastructure and actively participating in community initiatives that enhance quality of life.

We’re proud to invest in the people and organizations that make our host communities strong.
Through continued engagement and meaningful support, Granite City Energy Storage is helping build a stronger, more resilient future.

Investing in Minnesota
The Granite City Energy Storage project is fully funded by Benton Granite City Storage, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC.
Because the project is privately funded, the tax revenue it generates represents new income for the community. Granite City Energy Storage will contribute additional tax dollars that local governments can invest where it’s needed most, helping to improve roads, support first responders and enhance other vital community services.
In 2024, NextEra Energy Resources’ subsidiaries paid a combined total of $1.5 million* in state and local taxes and business-related fees in Minnesota.
*Annual Property Taxes: Includes property tax and other indirect taxes. Internal data based on 2024 full year.
These contributions help sustain local governments, police and fire departments and other community organizations, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to investing in the communities where we operate.
Energy Always Available
Battery energy storage creates flexibility in our electrical grid, improving how we deliver and use electricity. These systems store power when demand is low and release it during peak hours when demand is high, enhancing grid reliability.
Benton County is leading the way in a new era of American energy production, expanding reliable, renewable power sources that keep homes, businesses and communities running strong.

America has the energy, the resources and the innovation to achieve lasting energy independence.
